Locals 9705 and 480 came together to honor one of our own with a memorial bench along the esplanade in Trail today.
Ron Schmidt was a long time staff rep for our area. He worked with local Unions to help organize, build contracts and train many of the activists that have gone on to maintain and lead our Unions today.
480 President Armindo deMedeiros, 9705 Past Presidet Jim Sarre and 480 Finacial Secretary Norm Murdoch presented the bench and memorabilia to Ron’s family and shared their memories at the ceremony this evening.
Ronnie was remembered as being a shrewd bargainer. Like a poker player he was able to pick out the other side’s tells and use them to his advantage . Always knowing when to push or when to hold back in order to get the most out of a negotiation.
He was extremely knowledgeable and passed this on through shop steward courses and at Union schools thoughout his career. Valuable training, that molded many of the activists that maintain our Unions today and helped to build the strength of the Union now and into the future.
Ronnie was strong willed and had a biting sense of humour. Always expecting, and bringing out, the best in those he worked with. Ron Schmidt helped to make our locals stronger and was a mentor and freind to many.
The memorial bench is within site of the Union Hall, at the south end of the esplanade in Trail. It overlooks the new pedestrian walkway and will be next to the knew library and museum complex.
Please stop by and pay your respects to this icon of our local Union movement.
