Impact of Employment Insurance Changes | USW

Changes to the accessibility of EI have affected many people in our area especially in seasonal jobs like those in forestry, public works and our 9705 members at the Ski hill.

These changes have been brought in under the justification that “users of EI are abusing it and need more encouragement in finding new jobs”. This view doesn’t take into account the facts that: there are more people unemployed than there are jobs, often job seekers and open positions are in very different regions of the country from each other, and that for many of the available jobs, employers require specialized skills or provide inadequate income, so it is impossible for workers to even apply.

The changes are clearly just another example of the current government allowing employers to reduce operating costs and increase profits, rather than ensuring the social health and security of all Canadians.
